The medical facilities aboard Space Station Ian
Fleming are the most advanced offered by the Federation. These facilities
provide the medical staff with an impressive complement of tools with which to
handle an extraordinary range of medical problems for both known and presently
unknown species.
Facilities
The Medical deck consists of 8 medical
intensive-care wards, each with attached auxilliary labs, four medical research
labs, two nurseries, eight surgical suites, a physical therapy facility, a null-grav therapy
unit, one dental facility, two immunological labs, one stereotaxomony labs, one EM cytology labs and two full biohazard isolation
units.
In the case of extreme risk from biological
contamination, the Biohazard isolation units can be separated from the rest of
the Station by the use of docking clamps which jettison the units from the
station. The Biohazard units themselves have backup batteries which can maintain
life support and essential systems for a period of approximately 80
standard hours. A self destruct mechanism is also located in each unit which can
be activated either manually from the inside or through sub-space communication
with the proper command codes.
Staff
Normal medical staffing is twelve staff
physicians, nine medical technicians, and twenty four registered nurses. The
staff is divided into 3 shifts with minimum of four physicians, three medical
technicians and eight nurses assigned to each shift. A staff
of twenty four research and laboratory personnel are also attached to the
medical department. These individuals are typically attached to various research
projects, but are available on a priority basis as needed.
