Why a Ferret?
Ferrets are extremely intelligent creatures with a knack for getting out of tight situations and getting into areas that are believed to be impossible. Once loose, ferrets can be extremely difficult to locate and can wreck havoc while on the prowl. Ferrets are also known for their ability to solve obstacles and are some of the best thieves in the animal kingdom. Though not very big, ferrets can be a tough opponent because of their quickness and impressive fangs. A ferret’s favorite technique is that of hit and run, even while at play.
History of the Fighting Ferrets
The origins of the 901st can be
traced back to the early years of the Federation War with the Romulans.
Due to the lack of efficient Warp engine design and the vast distances
which the war encompassed, it was decided that mobile “First
Alert” Outposts would be built at the front lines to serve as a
First response to any Romulan incursions and these Posts would also
serve as jumping off points for offensive forays. The 901st was
created to meet these needs and was stationed at various Outposts
during the War.
The 901st participated in
many actions throughout the War, including the pivotal Battle of Gamma
Hydra, in which Federation forces prevented the Romulans from
establishing a base in the strategic area of space called the
Triangle. After the end of hostilities and the establishment of the
Romulan Neutral Zone, the Fighting Ferrets were based at various
Neutral Zone monitoring bases, essentially keeping the peace by
performing sentry duties.
During the Four Years
War with the Klingons, Starfleet realized the need for solid
intelligence information on Klingon strengths and deployments and the
Fighting Ferrets filled this role well. It was elements of the 901st
that warned Starfleet of the impending Klingon offensive near Axanar
and participated with the Federation Task Force, lead by Captain
Garth, at the decisive Federation victory at the Battle of Axanar.
Called upon again to defend Federation citizens during the Cardassian conflict, the Fighting Ferrets were deployed near the area of space called the Badlands defending Federation Colonies whenever threatened. Because of the unique nature of the area of space called the Badlands, it lended itself perfectly to the hit and run tactics of the Fighting Ferrets. After the War many Cardassian Commanders commented how the Fighting Ferrets were a continuous thorn in their side and were always leery of the Ferrets coming out of nowhere.
During the Dominion War it was determined to move the Fighting Ferrets to Space Station Ian Fleming for protective duty. Due to the ability of the Founders to infiltrate most Starfleet facilities, Space Station Ian Fleming became a vital Station to headquarter intelligence gathering and implementation efforts. Thus the Station's safety became top priority and has continued to be so after the conclusion of hostilities with the Founders right up to this day.
Throughout the unit’s history, the Fighting Ferrets have distinguished themselves as one of Starfleet’s most elite Fighter Squadrons and is currently being used to test candidates for Top Gun ratings at Space Station Ian Fleming.
